Demand kept climbing the next day: ERCOT's own supply-and-demand dashboard showed about 90,027 MW at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22 (with roughly 113,543 MW of capacity available), while the grid tracker gridstatus.io logged a peak near 91,308 MW, per Renewable Energy World.

ERCOT reported several other records the same week: maximum net load hit 75,733 MW, maximum solar production hit 34,665 MW, and maximum battery discharge hit 11,980 MW (about 12,000 MW). To put a megawatt in perspective, ERCOT says one MW can power roughly 250 homes during peak demand.

One honest caveat: ERCOT spokesperson Trudi Webster stressed that this week's numbers are preliminary. Early readings come from real-time "telemetry-quality" metering; ERCOT confirms official records later through its market settlement process using higher-quality meters. Expect the exact figures to be refined.

Why the Grid Held — Solar by Day, Batteries by Evening

The headline for Texas shoppers isn't just that demand set a record — it's that the grid met it without a single conservation appeal or emergency. ERCOT said it hadn't asked customers to reduce use, crediting a stockpile of batteries, renewables and gas generation that "answered the call reliably and without incident," per Renewable Energy World.

Two resources did the heavy lifting at the two hardest moments of the day. Triple-digit temperatures arrive during the sunniest hours, so a record 34,665 MW of solar covered a large slice of afternoon demand. Then, as the sun set and solar faded but air-conditioning load stayed high, ERCOT's battery fleet discharged a record of nearly 12,000 MW into the evening ramp. The risk window isn't closed, though. ERCOT's own seasonal assessments put the chance of a grid emergency higher later in the summer — about 5.96% in August and 4.38% in September — so a calm July is not a guarantee for the rest of the season.

What a Record-Holding Grid Does — and Doesn't Do — to Your Bill

Here's the part most coverage skips. A demand record is a wholesale, system-wide megawatt event. Your electricity bill is something different: one meter's kilowatt-hours multiplied by the price in your contract. Those two things touch each other only through your plan type:

  • Fixed-rate plans: the energy price is locked, so a record-setting afternoon on the grid does not change your per-kWh rate (aside from the narrow regulated delivery and grid-fee pass-throughs written into every Texas contract). That protection is exactly what you're paying for.
