About TexasPowerCost

In the deregulated Texas energy market, the "sticker price" is often a distraction. Most comparison sites rank plans by the advertised rate at exactly 1,000 kWh — the number providers engineer their plans to win. TexasPowerCost was built to do the opposite: rank plans by the real bill you'd pay at your usage, with the math shown.

Who's Behind TexasPowerCost

TexasPowerCost is researched and maintained by the TexasPowerCost Editorial Team — an independent, Texas-based effort run by a data analyst who got tired of watching neighbors overpay for electricity because the "cheapest" advertised plan wasn't actually cheapest at their real usage. We publish under the editorial team name rather than a personal byline because the method — transparent, reproducible, and applied identically to every plan — is what should earn your trust, not a personality. Our methodology is public on the methodology page, and every figure we cite can be checked against the source we name.

Our Methodology: Real-Rate Interpolation

We don't just "list" plans. Our engine processes official market rate filings using a transparent linear-interpolation model:

  • The usage gap: Every Texas Electricity Facts Label (EFL) publishes price points only at 500, 1,000, and 2,000 kWh.
  • The slope calculation: We interpolate between those points to estimate your cost at any usage level (e.g., 840 kWh or 1,650 kWh) — not just the advertised benchmark.
  • Honest benchmarking: We rank on the energy charge at your real, full-year usage, then show TDU delivery separately, so you see a clean, apples-to-apples comparison.

Editorial Standards & Data Sources

  • Plan data: the official Texas Power to Choose dataset, synced daily. What changed each day is published on our public plan-change tracker.
  • Delivery (TDU) charges: taken from the utilities' PUCT-filed delivery tariffs and re-checked when rates change (normally March 1 and September 1).
  • Usage & averages: U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and PUCT data, cited where used.
  • Verification: cost figures are recomputed from each plan's own EFL price points; we don't republish a rate on a single secondhand source.
  • Corrections: spot an error? Email contact@texaspowercost.com and we'll fix it and note material corrections.

Independence & How We Make Money

To keep the comparison tool free, we may earn from display advertising and from non-energy product affiliate links in our guides. Critically, this never touches the rankings: we take no commission from electricity providers for where a plan places, and we are not a broker. We sort by the math, not the payout. We are also independent of the PUCT and the state "Power to Choose" portal — we use its public data, but we're a private analysis site, not a government service.

Neutral rankings

No provider pays for placement. The cheapest plan for your usage is the cheapest plan — full stop.

EFL-focused

We always point you to the Electricity Facts Label — the one binding "source of truth" for any Texas plan.

Fresh daily

Plans are synced every day, with the day's changes published openly on our plan-change tracker.
