True Cost Calculation Guide

Understand the math behind our calculators: how linear interpolation across the EFL price points turns an advertised rate into your real monthly energy cost.

The "Teaser Rate" Antidote

In the ERCOT electricity market, providers engineer plans to look cheap at exactly 1,000 kWh. At TexasPowerCost.com, we provide the math that reveals the truth.

How Our Engine Works

Our engine uses Linear Interpolation. Instead of just looking at the 500, 1,000, and 2,000 kWh marks, we calculate the mathematical "slope" between them.

Whether you use 750 kWh or 1,250 kWh, we find the true electricity cost in Texas for your exact usage.

What Makes Up Your "True Cost"?

A real electricity bill in Texas is composed of three main factors:

Component Explanation Status
Energy Charge What you pay the provider per kWh. Shoppable
TDU Delivery Fees Regulated fees from your utility (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas or TNMP). Fixed
Base Charges Flat monthly account fees. Hidden Fee

Built From the Official EFL

Every price we show comes from the plan's Electricity Facts Label (EFL), which lists its average price at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh. Reading those three points side by side is what exposes base charges, bill-credit cliffs and usage-based penalties that the headline rate hides.

How This Calculator Works

The True Cost Calculator uses linear interpolation across the three EFL price points (500, 1000, 2000 kWh) to estimate your real per-kWh rate at any usage level. The result is the energy-supply cost you would actually pay at your specific usage, not the headline advertised rate. Your TDU's regulated delivery charge is reported separately: it is identical for every provider in your ZIP, so it changes your bill but never which plan is cheapest.
