7 Mistakes to Avoid When Using AI to Shop for Electricity

Used well, AI makes electricity shopping faster and clearer. Used carelessly, it hands you a confident wrong answer. Avoid these seven traps and you get the upside without the risk.

1. Asking AI for the cheapest plan

It has no live, ZIP-specific rate feed, so it guesses. Use a live-data tool or Power to Choose for pricing; use AI for understanding.

2. Trusting a rate it quotes from memory

Any rate an AI produces without a source is likely stale or invented. Verify every number against the actual Electricity Facts Label.

3. Not giving it your real usage

The cheapest plan changes with how much you use. Without your kWh, an AI's "cheaper" verdict is meaningless.

4. Accepting invented plans or providers

Models hallucinate plausible-sounding plans that don't exist. If you can't find the plan on Power to Choose, it isn't real.

5. Ignoring the bill-credit cliff

Ask specifically where a credit starts and stops. A plan that looks cheap at 1,000 kWh can double your rate just below the threshold.

6. Skipping the arithmetic check

AI sometimes miscalculates. When it estimates a bill, sanity-check the math and remember TDU delivery is added on top of the energy charge.

7. Pasting personal account details

Strip your account number, ESI ID and address before pasting a bill. Never give an AI credentials.

The safe pattern: live-data tool for pricing, AI for understanding, EFL for the final word. See the full hybrid workflow →

Common Questions

Is it a mistake to use AI for electricity shopping at all?

No — the mistake is using it for the wrong job. AI is excellent for understanding plans and bills and drafting questions; it is unreliable for supplying live rates or naming your cheapest plan. Keep it to understanding, ground it with the real Electricity Facts Label, and verify, and it is a genuinely useful shopping assistant.

How do I know if AI gave me a wrong electricity rate?

Check it against the source. Open the plan's EFL or its Power to Choose listing and compare the number the AI gave you. If they differ, or if you can't find the plan at all, the AI was guessing. The EFL is always the binding truth.
