Bill-Credit vs Fixed-Rate: The Cost-Curve Visualizer

A Texas bill-credit plan (say, 16¢/kWh with a $40 credit once you hit 1,000 kWh) can look unbeatable at exactly 1,000 kWh — and quietly cost more at 900 or 2,000. Drag the usage slider below and watch the two real cost curves cross. This is the 1,000 kWh illusion, made visible.

How to read the curve

Two things make the bill-credit line (orange) different from the flat line (blue). First, it starts higher, because its energy rate is higher. Second, it takes a sudden step down at the credit threshold — that vertical drop is the moment the credit kicks in. In the sliver of usage right at the threshold, the orange line dips below the blue one and the bill-credit plan genuinely wins. A single kWh short of the threshold, the credit vanishes and you pay the full higher rate.

Why this matters in Texas

Texas homes swing hard between seasons — a 2,000-square-foot Houston house might pull 1,800 kWh in August and 850 kWh in a mild January. On a plan tuned for 1,000 kWh, that household can land on the wrong side of the credit twice a year. The plan that "won" the advertised 1,000 kWh comparison ends up the loser in most real months. That's why the number that matters is your effective rate at your actual usage, not the marketing rate at exactly 1,000 kWh.

See it for your real plans

Type any two plans' numbers into the boxes above to model your own choice — then let the tool do it across every plan in your ZIP at your real seasonal usage. That's exactly what our Real-Rate Interpolation engine does automatically.
