Does Your Texas Smart Meter Measure Gas?

Last updated: October 18, 2026  ·  5 min read

It's a reasonable thing to wonder, especially if you've come from somewhere the two utilities share one box: you glance at the digital unit on your wall, see only a kilowatt figure, and ask where the gas reading went. In Texas, that missing gas number isn't a fault — it's exactly how the system is built.

The short answer

Your electric smart meter measures electricity only, in kilowatt-hours (kWh) — it never measures gas. Unlike the UK's combined gas-and-electric meters, Texas keeps the two utilities completely separate. If you have natural gas, it's on a separate meter read by a separate company — a gas utility such as Atmos Energy or Texas Gas Service — not your electric TDU and not your retail electricity provider. A meter showing only electricity is normal and correct.

Your Electric Meter Counts kWh, and Nothing Else

The smart meter on the side of your house has exactly one job: measuring how much electricity flows into your home, tallied in kilowatt-hours. That's the unit your electricity plan is priced in, and it's the number that flows through to your bill. It doesn't — and can't — track natural gas, water, or anything else. If you want to see what your meter is actually showing you, our walkthrough on how to read your Texas smart meter explains the display. So a meter that shows a kWh figure and no gas reading is working precisely as designed.

Gas Is a Separate Meter, Read by a Separate Company

If your home uses natural gas — for heating, a water heater, a stove, or a fireplace — that gas runs through its own dedicated meter, usually a separate unit somewhere else on the property. It's owned and read by your local gas utility, an entirely different company from the one that handles your electricity. Depending on where you live in Texas, that might be Atmos Energy, Texas Gas Service, or CenterPoint's gas business, among others. They send their own bill for gas, based on their own meter read. Your electric TDU and your retail electricity provider have nothing to do with it — which is exactly why the electric meter never carries a gas number.

Why Texas Isn't Like the UK's Dual Meters

Much of the confusion comes from the UK model, where a single smart-meter setup often reports both gas and electricity together, sometimes on one in-home display. Texas built its system differently. Here the electricity and gas utilities are separate businesses with separate infrastructure, separate meters, and separate regulators — so there was never a combined gas-and-electric meter to begin with. Texas also doesn't hand out an in-home display; you view your electricity usage online instead. Natural Gas in Texas Usually Isn't Something You Shop

There's one more difference worth understanding. Texas famously has a deregulated electricity market, where you pick your retail provider and plan from many competitors. Natural gas across most of the state doesn't work that way — for the typical home, gas service comes from your local regulated gas utility, and you generally can't shop a competitive gas "plan" the way you shop electricity. So while it pays to compare electricity plans carefully, there usually isn't an equivalent gas market to hunt through. For anything about your gas usage, rate, or a billing question, the right place to call is your gas utility, not your electricity provider.

A missing gas reading is not a broken meter

If your electric smart meter shows only a kWh figure and nothing for gas, there's nothing wrong with it — electric meters simply don't measure gas in Texas. Don't try to open, reset, or adjust the meter looking for a gas reading; it's sealed TDU equipment. For gas questions, contact your separate gas utility, and if you ever smell gas, leave the home and call your gas company's emergency line.

Common Questions

Does my Texas smart meter measure gas?

No. In Texas, your electric smart meter measures electricity only, recorded in kilowatt-hours (kWh). It does not measure natural gas at all. If you have gas service, it runs through a completely separate meter owned and read by your local gas utility, not by your electric TDU or your electricity provider.

Why does my smart meter only show electricity and not gas?

Because that is exactly what it is built to do. Texas electric meters track kWh of electricity and nothing else — unlike the UK, there is no combined gas-and-electric meter here. A display that shows electricity and no gas is normal and correct, not a sign of a fault. Your gas, if you have it, is metered separately.

Who reads my gas meter in Texas?

Your local gas utility does — a separate company from your electricity providers. Depending on your area, that could be Atmos Energy, Texas Gas Service, or CenterPoint gas, among others. They own the gas meter, read it, and bill you for gas separately from your electricity bill.

Can I shop for a cheaper natural gas plan in Texas?

Usually not. Unlike electricity, natural gas across most of Texas is not deregulated for typical residential customers, so you generally cannot pick a competitive gas plan the way you choose an electricity plan. Gas service comes from your local regulated gas utility. Electricity, by contrast, is very much worth shopping.
